Google Could Replace SIM Cards to eSIM with Android 13

 Google aims to make eSIM the dominant SIM method and wants to prevent users from using traditional SIM card slots. That’s why Google is testing new features in Android 13 Developer.

Today, everyone knows and owns a Subscriber Identity Module card, but embedded SIM cards were introduced in 2020. Since eSIM can only use one SIM profile at a time, there are some issues that most people don’t use.

According to the latest report from Esper’s Mishaal Rahman, Google is working on implementing a feature called Multiple Valid Profiles (MEPs) in Android 13 to allow the use of multiple SIM card profiles with a single eSIM.

Android 13 makes it easier to use eSIM

Android 13 facilitates the use of profile technology with multiple eSIM capabilities with the help of OEM. There is no need to add two eSIM elements or use a combination of eSIM and a physical nano SIM card slot to provide dual SIM performance.

In addition, MEP is software based. It is compatible with phones on the market and does not require major hardware changes. This process uses multiple logical interfaces in a single physical interface.

In the case of iOS, the iPhone 13 series supports two eSIMs simultaneously. However, it is not yet known how the company did it.

Google has patented several valid profiles in 2020. They have been testing and planning this feature for some time. The report also states that Google has tested MEP support on Pixel hardware and added a new API for managing eSIM profiles on Android 13.

In the future, it may be worth removing the SIM card slot using the new eSIM method. This feature will be available on Android 13. Unfortunately, there is no official release date for Android 13, but it will likely be later this year.
